Meet Kip Allen, a drummer, producer, and mixing engineer whose studio setup blends high-end analog gear with a streamlined workflow. With his Bazel Analogue-KB-16RU desk at the core, Kip’s space is built for efficiency, creativity, and the dynamic needs of both drum tracking and production.
WHAT DOES YOUR CURRENT STUDIO SETUP LOOK LIKE?
“My current studio setup is built for a hybrid of drum tracking and production. All analog preamps and plenty of outboard EQs and compressors. With all that gear, I have to have plenty of rack space strategically fit into a tight space.”
Kip’s space is tightly organized and purpose-built to manage a professional signal chain while still allowing flexibility. His outboard setup is dialed in—nothing is there for show.
WHAT BAZEL DESK DO YOU HAVE, AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
“I use the Bazel Analogue-KB-16RU. I chose it first because of the space it had to fit in, and second because I love having my gear right in front of me so I can make quick changes.”
The desk’s thoughtful design allows Kip to work fast and fluid, with everything within arm’s reach. The pullout keyboard tray also plays a big role in his creative process (more on that below).
WHAT KIND OF WORK DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPACE?
“Most of the work done here is recording drums for clients and sending them off. I also do a good bit of music production and mixing here as well.”
Kip’s studio is a go-to remote drum tracking room, but also a space where ideas come to life through hands-on production.
ONE PIECE OF GEAR YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
“I love my Empirical Labs Distressors. For drums, they are a must-have for me.”
Whether shaping transients or adding punch, these iconic compressors help Kip dial in that signature drum tone.
HOW HAS YOUR WORKFLOW OR SPACE CHANGED SINCE GETTING YOUR DESK?
“My workflow has improved greatly. Being able to reach everything without moving around has sped things up a lot.”
He also highlights a major feature that transformed his workflow:
“I love having my MIDI keyboard on the pullout tray. I can quickly pull it out to record an idea or part, then push it back in and out of the way. That was a huge game changer.”
ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE BUILDING THEIR FIRST STUDIO ?
“Treat the room acoustics early. The room is arguably one of the most important aspects of tracking and getting good sounds.”
Kip also recommends focusing on workflow and creativity over gear obsession:
“Invest in a good set of headphones, and don’t get bogged down chasing the ‘perfect’ gear. Just make great music, and let the gear come naturally as you go.”
